Make way for ceramic tupperware! I never really paid attention to tupperware safety until Sam and my parents persuaded me it wasn't safe to use them in the microwave or dishwasher all the time - even if they're BPA-free. Being the paranoid person that I am, I agreed and began to look for alternative tupperware options. We bought a bunch of Pyrex containers but they proved to be a bit heavy and fragile for everyday use. I also didn't like the fact that they were completely transparent.
I almost gave up hope until my mom surprised me with these Ciroa MicrowaveMe soup mugs last month. She found them on sale at Marshalls for $2.50 each! I did some research online and it looks like you can only find them at Marshalls/Home Goods/TJ Maxx for the time being, and they normally cost between $4.99 - $7.99 each.

Ciroa MicrowaveMe products are made of fine bone china and come with a silicone seal lid and steam release button. They're dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer safe - talk about versatility! They make bowls and soup mugs, but I've always been a fan of ginormous soup mugs. They're cozier to use in the winter time and the handle allows you to hold your food without burning yourself (again, I'm a bit clumsy). I don't like to microwave the lid since it's plastic, but it does seal very well and the datejust dial on the steam release button allows you to keep track of how long your food has been in storage for. Overall, I'm very happy with these mugs. I love that you can use them for anything and they're much prettier than most other tupperware containers.
My parents bought me the light blue, Japanese blossom set during their most recent trip to Toronto. They're a little heavier than the Ciroa mugs but they hold more food in them. They also come with steam release lids (pictured above), but I only use it to cool off food before I put it in the fridge.
Please note that I'm not saying plastic tupperware is bad or unsafe to use. I do use the Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids for salads and cold snacks (yogurt, fruit, veggie sticks, etc.). I'm just not comfortable with throwing them in the microwave and dishwasher on a daily basis. Think about all the heat they're being exposed to!
I hope this post was helpful for anyone who's looking for alternative tupperware options. Please let me know if you know of any other ceramic tupperware brands! I'm eager to add to my collection.
XOXO,
Elizabeth
